The first question most borrowers ask is simple: how much will I pay every month? This page shows example monthly instalments for common personal loan amounts in Malaysia, explains exactly how the figures are worked out, and helps you choose an amount and tenure that fits your budget.
How licensed money lenders calculate repayments
Under the Moneylenders Act 1951, licensed money lenders may only charge simple interest β interest is calculated on the original amount borrowed, never on interest. The legal maximum is 12% per annum for secured loans and 18% per annum for unsecured loans. The monthly instalment is worked out like this:
Monthly instalment = Loan amount Γ (1 + annual rate Γ months Γ· 12) Γ· months
Example: RM10,000 at 18% p.a. over 24 months β total interest RM10,000 Γ 18% Γ 2 = RM3,600 β total repayable RM13,600 β RM566.67 a month.
Repayment table at 12% p.a.
| Loan amount | 12 months | 24 months | 36 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| RM5,000 | RM467 | RM258 | RM189 |
| RM10,000 | RM933 | RM517 | RM378 |
| RM20,000 | RM1,867 | RM1,033 | RM756 |
| RM30,000 | RM2,800 | RM1,550 | RM1,133 |
| RM50,000 | RM4,667 | RM2,583 | RM1,889 |
Repayment table at 18% p.a. (maximum for unsecured loans)
| Loan amount | 12 months | 24 months | 36 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| RM5,000 | RM492 | RM283 | RM214 |
| RM10,000 | RM983 | RM567 | RM428 |
| RM20,000 | RM1,967 | RM1,133 | RM856 |

How much can you comfortably afford?
A helpful rule of thumb is to keep all your monthly debt repayments β car loan, credit cards, other loans plus the new instalment β within roughly a third to two-fifths of your take-home income. If the instalment feels tight, choose a longer tenure or borrow a smaller amount.
Shorter or longer tenure?
- Shorter tenure β higher monthly instalment, but you pay less interest overall.
- Longer tenure β lower monthly instalment, but more interest in total.
Pick the shortest tenure whose instalment still leaves you a comfortable buffer each month.
Before you sign
- Check that the interest rate, total repayable and instalment amount are written in your agreement.
- Make sure the rate is within the legal limit (12% secured, 18% unsecured, per annum).
- Never pay a fee or "deposit" before the loan is approved and disbursed β see how to spot a loan scam.
