Not everyone earns a monthly salary. If you run your own business, freelance, or drive for an e-hailing app, you won't have a payslip β but that doesn't mean you can't borrow. This guide explains what lenders look at instead, the documents that work, and how to give your application the best chance.
Why lenders usually ask for a payslip
A payslip is simply the easiest proof that you have a steady income to repay a loan. Responsible lenders must check that the monthly instalment is affordable for you. When there's no payslip, the question doesn't go away β you just answer it with different documents.
Who this guide is for
- Sole proprietors and small business owners (registered with SSM)
- Freelancers and commission-based earners (agents, insurance, property)
- E-hailing and delivery riders (Grab, foodpanda, Lalamove and similar)
- Hawkers, online sellers and other cash-based businesses
Documents that can replace a payslip
| Your situation | Useful income proof |
|---|---|
| Business owner | SSM registration, 6 months' business bank statements, Borang B (income tax return) |
| Freelancer / commission earner | Bank statements showing regular deposits, commission statements, invoices |
| E-hailing / delivery | Earnings statements from the app, plus bank statements showing payouts |
| Any of the above | EPF or i-Saraan contributions (if any), MyKad, proof of address |
The common thread is bank statements. Money that regularly lands in your account is the clearest evidence of income, so keep your business and personal accounts tidy in the months before you apply.
How lenders assess you without a payslip
- Average monthly income β usually worked out from 3 to 6 months of statements, so one good or bad month matters less.
- Consistency β steady deposits are viewed more favourably than large, irregular ones.
- Existing commitments β other loans and card repayments shown in your CTOS and CCRIS reports.
- How long you've been operating β a business with a longer track record is easier to assess.
Tips to strengthen your application
- Deposit your earnings into one bank account instead of spreading them around or keeping cash.
- Declare your income to LHDN β a filed Borang B is strong, official proof.
- Ask for an amount your average income can comfortably support, not your best month.
- Settle or reduce small outstanding debts before applying.
- Be honest about irregular income β lenders can work with it when it's explained clearly.
Be careful with "no documents needed" offers
Any lender that promises a loan with no documents and no checks at all, or asks you to pay a fee before the loan is released, is a warning sign. Read our guide on how to spot a loan scam before you share your details with anyone.

Apply NowFrequently asked questions
Can I get a personal loan in Malaysia without a payslip?
Yes. Self-employed people, freelancers and gig workers can apply using other income proof such as bank statements, SSM registration, Borang B or app earnings statements.
How many months of bank statements do I need?
Most lenders look at 3 to 6 months of bank statements to work out your average monthly income. Six months gives a more complete picture if your income varies.
