Need to borrow money but not sure where to start? This guide walks you through the whole process in Malaysia β from working out how much you need and choosing the right type of lender, to applying online and checking the agreement β so you borrow safely and only what you can repay.
Step 1: Work out exactly how much you need
Start with the real amount β the bill, the deposit, the repair β not a round number. Borrowing more than you need only adds interest. Then decide what monthly instalment you can comfortably afford alongside your existing commitments. Our monthly repayment table shows typical instalments for RM5,000 to RM50,000.
Step 2: Choose where to borrow
| Option | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Bank personal loan | Salaried applicants with a good credit record | Stricter requirements, usually takes several working days |
| Licensed money lender | Faster decisions, more flexible profiles (including the self-employed) | Interest capped by law: max 12% p.a. secured, 18% p.a. unsecured |
| Pawnbroker (pajak gadai / Ar-Rahnu) | Same-day cash if you own gold or valuables | Your item is held as security; regulated under the Pawnbrokers Act 1972 |
| Credit card cash advance | Very small, very short-term needs | Fees plus high interest from day one |
| Unlicensed lender (ah long) | Never | Illegal β excessive interest, harassment and threats |
Step 3: Check that you qualify
- Malaysian citizen, usually aged 21 to 60
- A regular income β salary, business income or gig earnings
- Existing commitments that still leave room for a new instalment
- A credit record without serious unresolved problems β see CTOS and CCRIS explained
Step 4: Prepare your documents
- MyKad (front and back)
- Latest 3 months' payslips, or other income proof if you're self-employed
- Latest 3β6 months' bank statements
- EPF statement or Borang B, if available
Step 5: Apply β online is fastest
Most lenders now let you apply online in a few minutes. Give accurate information β mismatched details are the most common reason for delays. A legitimate lender will usually call you to confirm your details and explain the offer.
Step 6: Read the agreement before you sign
- The interest rate, the monthly instalment and the total amount repayable are written clearly
- The rate is within the legal limit (12% p.a. secured, 18% p.a. unsecured, simple interest)
- The company name matches a licensed lender
- You have not been asked to pay any fee or deposit before receiving the money β that's a scam warning sign
Step 7: Repay on time
Set a reminder or standing instruction for each due date. On-time repayments build your credit record and make your next application easier. If you run into difficulty, talk to your lender early rather than missing payments.
